Mommy Makeover

“For mothers that struggle with their outward appearance after having children, a mommy makeover is an effective way to improve body contours and address specific pregnancy-related issues,” – Dr. Norman Rappaport

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures to restore your figure to its pre-motherhood shape—and give your spirits a well-deserved lift as well. This combination of procedures is customizable to help you achieve your specific cosmetic goals. In a single day of surgery and just one recovery period, you can regain your pre-pregnancy body and even throw in a few extra enhancements at the same time.

A mommy makeover offers the following benefits:

  • Reverses abdominal laxity caused by pregnancy
  • Restores breasts to their youthful shape and position
  • Turns back the clock on telltale signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles
  • Addresses pregnancy-related issues like stretch marks
  • Increases self-confidence and allows busy moms to do something special just for them

Options in a Mommy Makeover
There are many options women can choose to include in their own personal mommy makeover:

  • If your breasts have lost volume after pregnancy, breast augmentation can restore their fullness.
  • If you’ve developed sagging in your breasts, a breast lift — alone or in combination with breast augmentation — can give your bustline a more youthful look.
  • If you have loose, excess skin on your belly and lax abdominal muscles after pregnancy, a tummy tuck can give you firmer, trimmer abs.
  • If you’re beginning to notice signs of facial aging, a face lift or eyelid lift can help you look younger and more refreshed.

You may choose to have your procedures performed at the same time, or you may decide to stagger your procedures over a number of weeks. Dr. Rappaport will help you determine the best approach for your specific needs.

How is a Mommy Makeover Performed?
Dr. Rappaport may perform a mommy makeover on an outpatient basis or with an over-night stay, depending on the number and specific types of procedures to be performed. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep for your surgery. Most combinations of mommy makeovers will take 3-5 hours to complete.

Incisions will also vary, based on the specific procedures to be included, but usually focus around the breasts and abdomen. Dr. Rappaport takes great care to strategically place incisions where visible scarring will be at a minimum. Tiny sutures are also used to close the incisions, which further reduce post-operative scarring. We can also recommend incision care and products that will help the incisions heal as quickly and cleanly as possible.

What is the Recovery Like?
Recovery from a mommy makeover may take some time, particularly if more than one procedure was performed. Depending on the specific surgeries and job requirements, you may be back to work and regular activities within 2-3 weeks. Strenuous exercise may be discouraged for several more weeks, to allow the body to heal initially. Some women opt to have non-surgical procedures, like injectables or an IPL photofacial, included in their mommy makeover to reduce post-operative downtime.

Dr. Rappaport Answers Questions about Mommy Makeovers

Is it safe to have more than one plastic surgery procedure at one time?
Studies have shown that having more than one plastic surgery procedure at a time is no more dangerous than undergoing a single procedure, as long as the surgery does not take more than 4 to 5 hours. Breast augmentation and a tummy tuck, for example, can usually be performed in combination. However, you might choose any combination of procedures or decide to allow, 6 to 12 weeks between procedures. During our personal consultation, I can help you decide what is best for you.

If I exercise after having a baby, won’t that get me back to a pre-pregnancy shape?
It depends on your body. Some women are fortunate to resume near-pre-pregnancy shape, but most moms complain that they cannot return to their previous figure. While exercise will help strengthen the muscles stretched open during pregnancy, it cannot replace the effectiveness of tummy tuck surgery for the correction of damaged or loose skin.

Can a mommy makeover remove stretch marks?
A full tummy tuck removes most, if not all, of the skin between the belly button and the pubic region, as well as any stretch marks included in this area. However, stretch marks appearing above the navel will not be removed with this procedure.

How soon after having a baby can I have a mommy makeover?
You need to allow your body time to fully recover from childbirth. I recommend that you wait six months after your last pregnancy, or six months after weaning your youngest child, to have a mommy makeover.

I might still have more children. Should I have a mommy makeover?
I recommend that you wait until you’re done having children before you have a mommy makeover. If you have more children after your surgery, any pregnancies could undo the improvements of your makeover.
