Why One in Five Women Consider Plastic Surgery Today
Interest in plastic surgery among women spans the ages and is more prevalent than originally thought, according to a study by Real Self, an online community focusing on plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. The study found that as many as one in five women between the ages of 18 and 64 are considering a plastic surgery procedure, a trend that is up by around 200 percent. This new study puts a new focus on the demand for plastic surgery, in an industry that has previously measured demand by the number of procedures actually performed.
Which Age Groups are Driving the Trend?
Women between the ages of 18 and 24 are leading this trend. According to the Real Self study, 90 percent of women in this age bracket are unhappy with an area of their body to the point of considering a cosmetic change. Although the youngsters were leading the pack, the seniors were not far behind. The study also discovered that 85 percent of women between the ages of 55 and 65 were unhappy with at least one area of their body.
Reasons behind the Trend
A growing acceptance of plastic surgery in most social circles may be a primary factor driving more women to consider procedures. The addition of many effective non-surgical options might also be making women think more about how they could improve their appearance. The study also found that another 24 percent of women were considering non-surgical procedures like laser treatments and injectables to improve their appearance. We have been impressed with the acceptance and results of ULTHERAPY, a no “down time”, non-invasive skin tightening procedure..
When the women themselves were asked why they were considering a cosmetic procedure, 65 percent said the decision stemmed from a desire to feel more comfortable with their appearance. Nearly one-third of the women said a milestone birthday was the driving force, with more women in the later age categories citing this reason.
