Earlobe Repair Houston

Earlobe repair is a popular cosmetic procedure today, both for patients that have suffered damage to their lobes and those that want to eliminate the large holes left by popular gauges. Regular stress on the lobe can lead to large slits or sagging lobes that make you feel self-conscious about wearing certain jewelry or hairstyles. Earlobe repair is an outpatient procedure that repairs damage to the lobe and restores it to its original size and shape.

Earlobe repair offers the following benefits:

  • Repair an earlobe that has split
  • Reverse disfiguration caused by damage or genetics
  • Create symmetry between the two lobes
  • Correct enlarged holes caused by heavy earrings or gauges

Options in Earlobe Repair
The extent of damage to the earlobe will determine the specific technique Dr. Rappaport uses to make the repair. Options include:

  • Tiny incisions on both sides of the tear to even the edges so they can carefully be stitched back together.
  • Creation of a small flap may be used to redesign the earlobe in situations where the damage is too extensive to simply stitch the lobe back together.

How is Earlobe Repair Performed?
Dr. Rappaport performs earlobe repair on an outpatient basis, usually under local anesthesia. The procedure is relatively quick and straightforward, taking less than one hour to complete. Special suturing techniques are used on the incision to ensure minimal scarring after the procedure.

What is the Recovery Like?
Discomfort after earlobe repair is minimal and most patients can effectively manage the pain using over-the-counter pain medication Regular activities can be resumed within a day or two after the procedure. Proper care of the lobes after surgery will ensure the best possible healing. Dr. Rappaport will provide you with a post-operative instruction list so you can care for your lobes in the days following your procedure.

Dr. Rappaport Answers Questions about Earlobe Repair

Is there scarring after earlobe repair?
Because an incision is required to repair a torn or damaged lobe, there will be a degree of scarring afterward. However, I use special suturing techniques to keep scarring to an absolute minimum after the procedure. Most patients end up with a fine line that is barely visible and usually not a source of self-consciousness.

Will I need to come back in to have the stitches removed?
If sutures need to be removed, it is usually within a week after the surgery. Some sutures actually dissolve on their own. However, a post-operative visit is still important so I can make sure your surgical incision is healing properly.

How do I take care of my earlobe after surgery?
Your incisions will initially be covered with surgical tapes that remain until your post op visit. In addition, you will receive instructions on how to care for the area while it heals. The better you follow your instructions, the better your ear will heal and the less visible your scar will be.

Will I ever be able to wear earrings again?
Most patients are able to pierce the ear and wear earrings again. I usually have patients wait at least 6 months before piercing the ear again to be sure the area has healed fully. The ear lobe should be soft before re-piercing and large or heavy earrings avoided for up to one year.
