Chin Enhancement Houston

Cosmetic chin surgery, also called genioplasty, is a procedure that enhances the contour and appearance of the chin. A recessed chin can throw off the balance of the entire face, creating disproportion between the chin and other facial features. By creating a stronger, more prominent jawline, other features like the nose and cheekbones are better complemented to allow for harmony of the entire facial structure.

Chin augmentation offers the following benefits:

  • Create a stronger, more prominent chin
  • Enlarging the chin to bring it in proportion to the rest of the face
  • Create symmetry and balance in the lower jawline

Chin surgery may be performed alone, but it is commonly done in combination with other procedures like nose reshaping or a facelift to produce even more dramatic results.

Options in Chin Augmentation
Dr. Rappaport can perform chin augmentation in one of two ways:

  • A chin implant can augment a soft or recessed chin and give your jawline an improved angle. This procedure is typically done when the desired amount of augmentation is five millimeters or less.
  • A sliding genioplasty procedure can enhance a recessed chin by more than five millimeters. In this surgery, the chin bone is cut and moved forward. This procedure is also used to correct a vertically short or deviated chin.

How is Chin Augmentation Performed?
Chin augmentation surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes 1-2 hours to complete. The surgery can be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Incisions for chin augmentation are usually placed underneath the chin, where visible scarring will be minimal. Sliding genioplasty is performed through an incision inside the mouth.

What is the Recovery Like?
There is some discomfort after chin augmentation, which may be effectively managed with prescription pain medication. You may be limited to a soft diet for the first few days after surgery, since chewing may be difficult and uncomfortable. Most patients are able to return to regular activities within a few days after the procedure and more strenuous exercise after around 4-6 weeks. Results will be evident immediately and continue to improve with the resolution of swelling.

Dr. Rappaport Answers Questions about Chin Augmentation

When do you typically recommend chin surgery?
Many times, I perform chin surgery in combination with nose reshaping or other facial rejuvenating procedures to help achieve a better balance of facial proportions. The size of the chin can magnify — or minimize — the perceived size of the nose and can improve the appearance of the chin-neck angle. Genioplasty is also performed after orthodontics when more extensive jaw surgery has not been performed and the chin remains ‘soft’ in appearance.

If I have signs of aging in my neck, can a chin implant help?
Yes. A chin implant can give the perception of an improved chin-neck angle. In some cases, I may recommend removing fatty tissue from the neck—and perhaps tightening the vertical platysma muscle in the neck—through the same incision I use for inserting the chin implant.

How long will the results of chin augmentation last?
Most patients will only need one chin augmentation procedure to enjoy results that last a lifetime. In some cases, patients may need to replace the implant, due to changes in facial contours. Gravity and aging can continue to take their effect on the jawline, necessitating other procedures like a neck lift or skin rejuvenation at some point in the future.

How old should a patient be before having chin surgery?
You should have reached physical maturity before you consider this procedure.
