More men turning to BOTOX®, facial fillers in today’s job market

“The world out there is competitive, now more so than ever,” says Mark, age 56. “Appearance has a lot to do with what you do in business and how you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror. People don’t like to look at somebody who looks old and tired.”

Recently, Mark came to Dr. Rappaport for rejuvenating facial injectable treatments. “A lot of men feel the pressure of maintaining a youthful appearance,” Dr. Rappaport acknowledges. “Facial injectables have minimal to no downtime, so they are attractive to anyone in the workplace—or the job market.”

Though the number of women’s cosmetic procedures fell more than 3% from 2008 to 2009, men’s procedures increased 8%, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Men’s BOTOX®treatments increased 14.5%, microdermabrasion treatments jumped 42.9% and hyaluronic acid facial filler treatments like Juvéderm® grew by 46.1%.

‘Before BOTOX®, I looked extremely serious and preoccupied’

Over time, the muscles between the eyebrows and on the forehead can cause worry lines that make you look stressed and older. “I looked intense when there was nothing to look intense about,” Mark recalls.

BOTOX® treatment relaxes the muscles that cause facial wrinkles. “BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a body chemical that signals muscles to contract,” Dr. Rappaport explains. “A treatment takes just a few minutes and lasts up to four months.”

Radiesse® smoothes the nose-to-mouth ‘parentheses’

Mark had also noticed that the lines from his nose to the corners of his mouth, known medically as the nasolabial folds, had deepened over the years, making him look drawn and tired.

Dr. Rappaport treated Mark with Radiesse®, a semi-permanent facial filler. “Radiesse uses calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier,” he explains.

“While the skin re-absorbs the gel carrier over time, the smooth, tiny microspheres remain, stimulating the treated areas of your skin to produce new collagen,” says Dr. Rappaport. “A treatment can last up to 15 months.”

“Radiesse® helps give your face a bit of a lift,” says Mark. “It takes out the deeper wrinkles that come with time and gravity. Now I feel more attractive, more youthful—and how you feel about yourself, you radiate.”

Treatments are now faster, more comfortable

An innovative technique that combines Radiesse® with a local anesthetic is making treatments much more comfortable. “Mixing lidocaine with Radiesse® has averted the need for regional anesthetic blocks,” Dr. Rappaport explains.

Another advantage of the new technique: “When you come in for Radiesse®, I can start your treatment right away, without having to wait for a traditional regional anesthetic block to take effect,” Dr. Rappaport adds. “And you can go right back to your normal activities after your treatment.”
