What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is an injectable wrinkle filler that immediately adds youthful volume to contour, correct and beautify facial features.
Where is Radiesse used?
Radiesse can fill in lines and add rejuvenating fullness to the:
- Nasolabial folds from the nose to the corners of the mouth
- Cheeks
- “Tear trough” area below the eyes
- “Marionette lines” from the corners of the mouth to the chin
- Jawline to mask the early signs of jowling
How is Radiesse different from Restylane or Juvéderm?
Radiesse uses a different material—calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier—rather than hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane or Juvéderm.
How does Radiesse work?
While the skin re-absorbs the gel carrier over time, the smooth, tiny microspheres remain, stimulating the treated areas of your skin to produce new collagen for a soft, natural look that lasts.
How long does Radiesse last?
Radiesse is considered a semi-permanent material; it can last from nine to 15 months, depending on where it is injected. Any filler injected into areas of high muscle activity—such as the lips—will not last as long as fillers injected into more-passive areas.
Will someone be able to tell I've had Radiesse
by touching my skin?
No. Radiesse stays soft, but treated areas may initially be slightly firmer than adjacent areas of the face.
Is Radiesse made from animal products?
No. Radiesse is made of a synthetic, biocompatible substance that is identical to what is found naturally in the body. There's virtually no risk of an allergic reaction because Radiesse does not contain any components derived from animals or humans. For that reason, you don't need skin allergy testing before having a Radiesse treatment.
However, if you believe you're having an allergic reaction to Radiesse, seek medical attention right away.
Is there any downtime after a Radiesse treatment?
In most cases, no. Most patients return to their normal activities almost immediately after a Radiesse treatment. If swelling or redness occurs, it usually subsides in 24 hours. Any mild bruising, which can be covered by makeup, may persist for a few days.
Does Radiesse have any side-effects?
Very few side-effects have been seen in clinical trials and actual usage. Some patients may experience common injection-related reactions, such as mild irritation, edema, swelling, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the injection site. These conditions typically subside within one or two days.
What if I'm taking medication or supplements?
You may need to stop taking some medications and supplements for a few days before a Radiesse treatment. Please tell Dr. Rappaport's office if you're taking medications, such as aspirin or aspirin products, or supplements when you schedule your Radiesse appointment.
Dr. Rappaport answers questions about Radiesse
How important is technique in using Radiesse?
“The success of Radiesse treatments—as with all injectable fillers—is very dependent on the technique and skill of the injector. It's important to know the experience level of the person treating you.
I do all Radiesse injections myself—as I also do for Botox and hyaluronic acid facial fillers. I'm able to sculpt and enhance the appearance of your face with injectables, not just fill voids.”
Are Radiesse treatments very uncomfortable?
“I used to routinely use a regional anesthetic block before injecting Radiesse. Now I use a technique of mixing local anesthetic with Radiesse, which makes the treatments more comfortable. This technique may eliminate the need for anesthetic blocks in some patients. Also, using finer-gauge needles makes the treatments more comfortable.”
Which do you think is more cost-effective—
Radiesse or hyaluronic acid fillers?
“I believe Radiesse is more cost-effective for patients in terms of the enhancement received for the volume injected.”
My cheeks are starting to look ‘sunken.’
Can Radiesse help?
“Yes. I use Radiesse in the cheekbone region, extending toward the nose, as a soft-tissue ‘bulker’ to give more substance to the mid-face. If you've been considering cheek implants, you can get a more subtle change with Radiesse.”
How can Radiesse make my jawline look younger?
“If you have ‘marionette lines’ from the corners of your mouth to your chin, I use Radiesse to fill in the crease of the marionette lines and along the jawline to soften the indentation at the bottom of that crease.”
