Say Goodbye to the Sag: Options in Eyelid Rejuvenation

The eyes are often one of the first places on the face to show the signs of aging, with puffiness underneath and sagging skin up above. Restoring a youthful appearance to the eyes and upper face can have a profound impact on your entire appearance, making you look refreshed and awake instead of old and tired. At Houston Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer different options in eyelid rejuvenation to help each one of our patients achieve their specific aesthetic goals.

Raise the Brow, Refresh the Look

In some cases, patients will achieve the refreshed look they are hoping for with a brow lift. This procedure removes excess skin and tissue from the forehead area, lifting the brow line to a more youthful position. At the same time, a brow lift can open up the eyes by eliminating some of the sagging or hooding the frequently occurs with the upper eyelid.

Is a Brow Lift the Right Choice for You?

To determine whether a brow lift is the right procedure for you, consider how a natural, youthful brow line should look. On women, the brow begins at the top of the nose and creates a gentle curve above the orbital rim that peaks between the pupil and the outer corner of the eye. In men, the brow line is more horizontal and generally located at the orbital rim.

Women will sometimes see their brow line become more horizontal over time, sometimes falling to or below the orbital rim. Men may also see their brow line start to drop. Take a look at photos of yourself from a few years ago and compare them to what you see today. Is there a change in your brow line? If so, a brow lift might be the right procedure for you.

About the Brow Lift

Brow lifts are usually performed by Dr. Rappaport on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The procedure involves small incisions inside the hairline where visible scarring will be minimal. Most patients are able to return to regular activities within 1-2 weeks after this surgery.

Giving the Lids a Lift

It is actually more common for patients looking for facial refreshment to benefit from an eyelid lift or blepharoplasty. This procedure specifically addresses the upper lids, lower lids, or both eyelids at the same time. During the procedure, excess skin and tissue is removed from the lids to open up the eyes and create a more awake appearance.

Is Eyelid Surgery the Right Choice for You?

Eyelid surgery is usually recommended for men and women that have any of the following concerns:

  • Wrinkled skin of the upper eyelid that interferes with makeup application
  • Drooping lids that obstruct the line of vision
  • Deep tear troughs under the eye
  • Bags and circles under the eyes that make you look perpetually tired

About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is also performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. This procedure involves small incisions either inside the eyelid or in the natural creases of the eye where visible scarring will be minimal. Most patients are back to regular activities within two weeks.

It can be difficult to know whether a brow lift or eyelid surgery is the best choice for you without consulting with an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Rappaport. Dr. Rappaport will listen to your concerns and your aesthetic goals to help you choose the best procedure for your needs. In some cases, patients may benefit most from a combination of blepharoplasty and a brow lift performed simultaneously in a single procedure.
