Breast surgery is an effective way to enhance the shape and contours of the breast. There are a number of breast procedures to choose from today, allowing your plastic surgeon to customize your surgery to your unique concerns and desired outcome. Unfortunately, choice can also bring confusion when it comes to picking the best procedure for your specific needs. To help you with the decision-making process, we have provided a basic overview of the differences between breast augmentation and breast lift surgery.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases the size and fullness of the breast, usually by placing implants in the breast tissue. A new procedure, known as auto augmentation, can also be performed on some patients. This procedure uses the patient’s own breast tissue to create a fuller shape. The number one goal of augmentation is to increase cup size and create a more proportionate body contour.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is more focused on changing the shape and position of the breast than increasing breast size. This procedure is recommended to patients with a significant degree of ptosis or sagging of the breast. The surgery lifts the position of the breast to create a more youthful contour, by remove excess tissue and skin from the lower half of the breast. The nipple and areola may also be repositioned during this procedure to achieve a natural look.

Decision Time

Choosing between augmentation and a lift procedure can be difficult for some patients. The first step is to look at the amount of sagging you are experiencing. One simple test is to place a pencil underneath the breast. If the pencil does not fall, it is likely you have enough sagging for a breast lift. A breast lift may also be recommended if your nipples point downward, instead of forward.

If you are mostly happy with the size of your breast, a lift procedure alone may be sufficient to give you the look you want. Fullness alone can be addressed with breast augmentation. If you would like to increase breast volume while placing the breasts in a more youthful position, you can combine augmentation and a lift to produce a more dramatic result.
